Native Ethernet Transmission beyond the LAN

The purpose of this talk is to show the potential of the 10 Gigabit Ethernet standard when used in a long-distance networking context. We will demonstrate, from the experience of the ESTA EU project (IST-2001-33182), how 10 GE interfaces may be exploited to provide extended LAN segments over long distances: LAN PHY over 550 km in Denmark and WAN PHY over more than 18000 km between Geneva and Tokyo over an OC-192c circuit. The talk will contrast an "Ethernet everywhere" approach with alternative methods for the transmission of Ethernet frames, like GFP coupled with LCAS.
