Toward ubiquitous IP Telephony deployments: state of the art, challenges and recommendations

Inside the researchers’ community there is a raising interest for IP Telephony deployments as demonstrated by several actors’ efforts in the area (TERENA IP Telephony Cookbook and Task Force on Voice, Video and Collaboration,Internet2 SIP.edu implementation, etc.). The question is if Voice over IP technologies has reached the level of maturity that legitimates their introduction in the production environment of the National Research Networks (NRENs) and research institutes on a large scale. This extended abstract will report on actual deployments trends around the globe as well as implementation recommendations and next steps towards a ubiquitous IP
Telephony infrastructure.
