Managing Bandwidth and Optimising Services on Campus

We describe work undertaken by the JANET Bandwidth Management Advisory Service (BMAS) to facilitate the optimisation of network-based services by the application of bandwidth management technologies. We present our investigations into the effectiveness of several popular technologies applied to time-critical streamed video in a low bandwidth (2Mbit/s) multi-protocol development environment. We then describe the use of one of these technologies (a Packeteer PacketShaper 9500) in production service on the University of Manchester campus network. We show that the application of bandwidth management can significantly reduce network and critical link congestion and have a beneficial impact on a service network environment.
