WLAN at CERN

CERN is a very large academic environment, extremely inhomogeneous in terms of the types of machines that connect to the network and the operating systems they run. It hosts several thousand visitors at any one time and requires wireless coverage in unusual locations like the underground LHC tunnel.

All this poses special challenges for the deployment of wireless LANs everywhere at CERN. In this talk I will share our experience so far. I will also discuss security concerns and briefly describe our on-going effort to introduce IEEE 802.1x based authentication for network acess control.
