Optical Fibre Development for High Data Rate Transmission

Advanced fiber development is strongly influenced by technological and economical environment of the telecommunications industry. At the end of the nineties, explosive growth of the Internet led to the requirements of >1 Tbit/sec capacity per fiber in the long-haul and submarine transmission systems. In order to achieve this capacity high data rate of 10 Gbit/sec and wavelength division multiplexing were employed. The next data rate in SDH hierarchy – 40 Gbit/sec is being developed and a number of successful field trials have been conducted. We discuss the development of advanced fibers that support high transmission data rates in long haul transmission.
