Pervasive Core Security

Traditionally service provider core networks were secured device by device, in a way that every device in the network had its own security mechanisms, but there was no overall layer of protection around the core network. During the recent years attack patterns have shifted from attacks against servers to attacks against network devices and indeed against the entire Internet. These new attack tendencies require a new approach to core security, protecting the core network in its entirety. This paper describes the new approaches taken to secure core networks, and their impact on the overall Internet.
