Copyright Strategies in the Networked Environment

The evolving network environment provides fertile ground for development of new tools, for example, P2P networking, the semantic web, and eLearning tools such as VLEs, Lifelong Learner Records and ePortfolios. However, it has also been key to the transformation of copyright, with recent changes to the copyright regime providing significant new powers to rightholders, at the expense of egalitarian public access to research and educational materials. It is essential for researchers and educators to understand the issues, not just to avoid infringements, but to ensure that where possible, copyright mechanisms are used to ensure equitable public access to resources.
